Frequently Asked Questions About Photo & Information
What kinds of cameras do we use in Photography?
Standard Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. These cameras must take 35mm film, and have a manually adjusted aperture (on the lens) and shutter speed dial. Point-and-shoot or other 35mm cameras lacking light meters are discouraged. See diagram below on the main components of a SLR camera.
Do I need to buy a camera for this class?
No, but Students who are enrolled in Photo are highly encouraged to have their own camera. This might be borrowed from a friend or family member, or even purchased as used. Students should make an effort to find a camera on their own, but are not required to buy one. There also many places a camera can be purchased by checking out the photo supplies below!
What are the benefits of having my own camera?
There are lots of them! First, having your own camera means you can create your own time management routine for solving shooting assignments, and don’t have to wait for class cameras to become available. Second, consistently using the same camera means that you will learn how to use it faster than having to switch between using multiple cameras. Every camera has its own personality, and the sooner you figure yours out, the better!
